Visa And The Fight against Acai Scam
Over a hundred Acai merchants were closed down by Visa during the summer. This came after chronic complaints were received from customers who were scammed into signing free trial offers which later turned out as a scam to get their credit card details. Such details were then used by scammers to force a monthly subscription on them amounting to hundreds of dollars.
Acai berry came into prominence as a result of the widespread media coverage which praised the fruit for its huge health benefits. There are a number of legitimate companies which sell health products derived from the fruit on the internet. But along with them came the numerous fly-by-night companies which forcefully sell fake or inferior products to consumers.
Aside from Acai free trial offers, such fake companies also publish endorsements from well known celebrities on their websites. This has been allowed at first to some extent, but when it got too far, lawsuits against these companies followed.
Supposedly Acai endorsers such as Oprah Winfrey and Rachel Ray, the Better Business Bureau, state lawmakers and the Federal Trade Commission are now one in the fight against fake Acai fruit health derivatives sold by fly by night companies. Visa has also joined the battle and 100’s of scam acai companies have been relieved of their merchant accounts.
